THE CHAMOIS MOUNTAINEERING CLUB
Who are we?
The CHAmois Mountaineering Club (CMC) was founded in 1964 by members
of the Countrywide Holidays Association as a nationally based mountaineering
club. Although its membership of over 200 is quite widely dispersed,
most members live in the northern industrial areas around Liverpool,
Manchester, Sheffield and Leeds. CMC covers all ages and both sexes,
and is organised and run on a democratic basis.
What do we do?
Each year CMC organises about two dozen weekend mountaineering meets,
as well as several longer ones, at which the predominant activities
are winter and summer fell walking and scrambling, plus rock climbing
in the summer, and snow and ice climbing when winter conditions
are suitable.
Where do we do it?
CMC meets over the last weekend in each month at our own mountaineering
centre in Snowdonia. In the middle of each month, a weekend meet
is arranged at another UK mountain venue, mainly in the Lake District,
Peak District or Yorkshire. We usually stay in hutted accommodation
between October and April, and on campsites in the summer months.
Each year there are two longer meets in Scotland, one at Easter,
and the other for the week which includes Spring Bank Holiday. Each
winter there is a week-long downhill skiing meet in the Alps. In
most summers there is an alpine climbing fortnight.
Are new members welcome?
Prospective members are welcome and are invited to come along to any
meet to find out about the club first hand. For some meets you will
need to book in advance. Full details of the club, together with a
copy of the latest newsletter and a membership application form can
be obtained from the Membership Secretary or the club website.
