Chelmsford Rambling Club
Chelmsford is the county town of Essex, the county which extends from
the Greater London Area north easterly to the coast of East Anglia.
It is the home of the Marconi Company and the birth place of radio
broadcasting. The first sound broadcast took place in June 1920 when
the voice of Dame Nellie Melba was heard in many countries.
Our club was founded in 1934 to encourage the use and enjoyment of
the extensive network of footpaths in the County and the conservation
of the countryside. It has over 600 members with a comprehensive programme
of social events and well over 200 walks a year including standard
all day, easy pace all day and half day walks and strolls, on Wednesdays
and week ends throughout the year. We also have occasional coach/rambles
to neighbouring areas in the Home Counties and East Anglia, short
weekend rambles and an annual walking holiday.
Our regular weekly walks are from different venues throughout the
County starting at 10.30 a.m and in the case of all day walks, finishing
about 3.30 p.m. covering approximately 10 miles at standard pace or
7 miles easy pace. The leader arranges with one of the many “rambler
friendly” proprietors of pubs for the members to consume their own
packed lunch with a drink purchased on the premises. The half day
easy pace rambles of about 4/5 miles also start at 10.30 and finish
lunch time. The strolls are usually morning walks of no more than
3 miles especially for those members who can no longer manage either
the standard or easy pace walks. It is a way of keeping them in touch
with old friends and up to date with Club activities.
Although the majority of our members are retired many of them are
also enthusiastic participants in other leisure activities such as
bowls and swimming. We are also fortunate in having many younger members
of working age who can walk at weekends.
Over the years the Club has acquired a very friendly reputation for
welcoming new members. We particularly welcome guests from overseas
who may be staying temporarily in the Chelmsford area or who are on
holiday here.
Contact the Public Library, County Hall, Chelmsford, for the name,
address and telephone number of our General Secretary. The annual
membership subscription is £2.50 for single persons and £4
for couples.
