Newcastle and District CHA and HF Rambling Club
This is one of the oldest Rambling Clubs in the country, with a continuous
history of over 100 years. We have a full programme throughout the
year with rambles on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays. The Wednesday
and Saturday walks are usually half days, but in the summer there
are occasional whole day outings. Sunday walks are all whole day outings,
usually with two picnic meals when you carry a flask. The party is
usually back in Newcastle between 7pm and 8pm except in the midwinter
months when we are usually home for tea.
It is extremely rare for a ramble to be cancelled because of the weather
– it is therefore sensible to carry or wear adequate waterproofs
and stout footwear, though not necessarily boots, with woollen socks.
There is a leader for every ramble, and the route will have been pioneered
beforehand. Public transport is used for some of the nearer rambles,
but the cost of this has increased so much that we find it more convenient
to hire special coaches. This enables the party to be dropped off
and picked up at suitable spots, but it does mean booking your place
on the coach in advance. Some rambles are circular, starting and finishing
at the same point, and in these cases private cars can be used. All
instructions are in the syllabus.
We arrange a programme of socials on Saturdays from the beginning
of October to the end of March, which are held in Christ Church
Hall, Falconer Street, Newcastle. The programme for these evenings
is varied, and apart from a charge of 20p for a cup of tea and a
biscuit, there is usually no charge, the cost being met out of the
Annual Subscription of £6.00. Some members are only interested
in the rambling side, but all the facilities are there for everyone
to enjoy.
